Itzhak Perlman plays the Theme from Schindler's List composed and conducted by John Williams. |
The maestro now joins four klezmer groups: Brave New World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman and the Klezmer Conservatory Band for a joyous get-together with unforgettable Klezmer melodies.
Itzhak Perlman says that, more than anything else he has recorded, this is truly his own music--"what you might hear if you came to my house and I decided to jam with some friends." And jam he does--with some very talented friends indeed. Klezmer music, which combines the folk and religious music of Yiddish-speaking cultures with various musical traditions of countries such as Russia, Turkey, and Greece, is unusual territory for a major label and a superstar artist, but here the combination works perfectly. Perlman, who normally is the star of his recordings, just blends into the whole celebration. The playing of violin, accordion, mandolin, clarinet, and other instruments is stylish, infectious, and at times virtuosic. --David Vernier |

Hilary Hahn plays Paganini's famous 24th Caprice. This theme and 11 variations has inspired dozens of musical works since it was composed in 1819. In Paganini's lifetime many thought he must have sold his soul to the devil to be able to play such difficult pieces on the violin. Today these caprices are still considered among the most difficult works ever written for solo violin, although Hilary Hahn seems to make anything on the violin seem effortless! |

Canadian violinist Leila Josefowicz plays excerpts from Zigeunerwisen, or Gypsy Airs. Written in 1878 by the Spanish composer and violinist Pablo Sarasate, it is based on themes of the Roma people, specifically the rhythms of the csárdás. The extremely fast and challenging solo violin part includes long spiccato runs, double stops, artificial harmonics and left-hand pizzicato. |

Shenzo Gregorio playing Rock and Blues techniques on the viola. This is really fun! Shenzo here uses pizzicato, percussion loops, sul pont (feedback sound) double stops, left hand pizzicato, chopping (snare drum sound), etc to make an awesome sound on the viola. |
